What is Greenwashing?
Greenwashing is a practice in which companies or organisations mislead consumers by presenting their products or activities as more ecological or sustainable than in reality.
This term came from a combination of "green" and "whitewashing" (whitewashing).
This is often used as a way to increase sales or improve the company's image, without actually implementing sustainable practices.
Futtera Sustainability Communication distinguishes several signs of greenwashing, including:
- concealing or presenting only part of information on the product's life cycle,
- no description of specific environmental benefits,
- provide data which the consumer cannot verify,
- use of generals and scientific language,
- use of green colours and environmental themes.
