April 12 is not only a day when we can celebrate our love of chocolate, but also a moment of reflection on the difficult reality of producing this delicious delicacy. Although for many of us chocolate is a favorite addition to dessert or snack, for millions of farmers in the countries of the Global South this is the basis for living.

🍫 Cocoa cultivation is a basic source of income for millions of small farmers who often have to deal with uncertain living conditions and low earnings. Many people in the world are living with an amount of less than $1.25 a day.

🌍 The chocolate market is dominated by several large corporations, which often unfairly divide profits. As a result, farmers receive only a small percentage of profits, while cocoa beans prices are decreasing.

💔 This results not only in economic but also in social and environmental problems. Many cocoa farms use the work of children, leading to further social tragedies.

How can we change things? Consumer awareness is crucial. By choosing products from responsible, fair sources, we can support farmers and promote fairer trade.

Choosing chocolate with the certificate of Fair Trade is a valuable alternative. However, Fairtrade's share of world trade remains small.
