On April 9, a sentence was passed that could open a new era in the sense of human rights. A group of over 2.5 thousand seniors from Switzerland accused their country's government of not fighting climate change enough.
The court found them right.
The link between extreme temperatures and climate change and their impact on our health is quite basic scientific knowledge. Older people are most likely to die during ever more frequent and longer heat waves in Europe. 👵🌡️
It is, however, crucial to indicate the whole country as guilty. The ECHR stated that Switzerland did not create a good enough strategy to reduce emissions and counter the effects of the climate disaster, as it committed itself (like most of the world) by signing the 2015 Paris Agreement.
The judgment is final, the Strasbourg Court is the last legal institution for 46 States belonging to the Council of Europe.
However, it does not impose any penalties, rather a form of pressure on Switzerland and other countries to take climate policy more seriously. And so above all, this provision should be understood – as a historical precedent, perhaps the most important in the last decade. 🌱
