The World Humanitarian Day, celebrated on August 19, was established by the UN General Assembly in 2008 to commemorate the tragic events that took place in 2003. At the time, 22 humanitarian workers, including Sergio Vieira de Mello, a UN High Representative, were killed as a result of the bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad.

👥This day is intended to honor all those who, with dedication, bring humanitarian aid around the world, often in extreme conditions and dangerous situations. It is also an opportunity to recall the huge human needs that arise from armed conflicts, natural disasters or social and economic crises.

Each year, World Humanitarian Day focuses on another theme, which aims to highlight the specific challenges and risks of humanitarian aid. The campaigns organised on this day highlight the importance of international solidarity, cooperation and the need to support humanitarian organisations.

It is also worth noting that the number of people in need of humanitarian aid is constantly increasing, and according to UN reports, in 2023 more than 350 million people worldwide needed immediate help, which is the highest number in history.

🤝The World Day of Humanitarian Aid is a moment to realize how much more needs to be done to ensure a decent life for everyone, regardless of where they live. It is also a reminder that each of us can help to improve the situation by engaging in various forms of assistance, supporting humanitarian organisations or simply sharing our knowledge and awareness of global problems.
